Autobiographical Collage Paintings

Since moving to The Falcon Academy of Creative Arts, I am also overjoyed to spend one period per day at Field High School teaching a basic Art One class.  Recently, I challenged my students to a painting project that made a statement about themselves.  They were to gather six to eight items that told me something about themselves.  The items should contain two objects with a lower level of difficulty in painting, two with a medium level and two that would be pretty difficult for them to try and paint.  We have been learning color theory through mixing paints, as well as tinting and shading.  Students are trying to match the proportions of their autobiographical collage on their canvas as well as the color of items.  The paintings below are about halfway through this process and I am thoroughly impressed.  It is amazing to see what they have been able to accomplish with some patience and some demonstrations on my part of how to manipulate paint and brushes!

Scrap Paper + Blender = ART!

Paper Making
November 29, 2010

Fourth grade students integrated art with other major subject areas including science, language arts and social studies through this paper making unit.  By placing paper scraps into old blenders with water, we were able to turn the paper back into its previous state of pulp.  Through this we discussed the different physical forms of matter, and also the significance of recycling to our planet.

Next, we incorporated the Native American culture by discussing how they were forced to make many things that they needed rather then purchase them at a store.  Lastly, these handmade papers with their design concepts included will serve as front and back covers to language arts journals that they will be using in Mrs. Walker's class.

ART IS EVERYWHERE!

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

Students were thrilled with our guest artist this past week, Ron White.  White is a high school art teacher and ice sculptor.  He has sculpted ice for high profile clients and has competed in numerous ice sculpting competitions around the world since 2000.  His art is phenomenal and can be viewed at www.ronwhiteart.com.  White used various sizes of chainsaws to carve out The Field Local Schools falcon "F" in our auditorium as students watched.  In a matter of minutes, a simple block of ice was chiseled into an elaborate work of art.  The ice sculpture was then saved and displayed on Saturday night at the football stadium as The Field Falcon football team hosted their first state play-off game in history against Youngstown Cardinal Mooney.  There were great accomplishments all around the Falcon community this week!  To see the footage of our guests artist you can visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIWpX1SwT-8.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Big things are happening at The Falcon Academy of Creative Arts!  Today marked the official GRAND OPENING of our school!  Students performed, a creative ribbon was created in my classroom and then cut by our board member president, and our new sign and logo was unveiled.  Later parents and students gathered for cider and donuts.  Excitement is in the air as each week we get closer to our vision and the dreams that we have for our school.

Art and Science... Science and Art!

Art integration was truly buzzing at The Academy this week when fourth graders combined their science lesson on plant parts and growth stages with a ceramic fossil leaf bowl.  The perfect weather this week lent itself to the creation of these beautiful works of art.  Students placed their leaves with the vein side down into a slab of clay then used a carving tool to trace around it.  While working they reviewed their science curriculum and even sang the songs they wrote in Mr. Lemmo and Mrs. Walker's class about plant life.  These clay creations will be fired in a kiln and the leaves will burn up and disintegrate off of them (another connection with science!) leaving behind a fossil.  Finally students will glaze them for a gorgeous end product!

Making Progress...

Wow!  What an exciting (and exhausting) first week back to school!  Although it is already October, I recently joined the staff at The Falcon Academy five weeks late due to the beautiful baby boy that I had over the summer.  He was born on the 4th of July... check out his picture.  Anyhow-- The Academy is buzzing with creative children with innovative, exciting ideas.   In our art classes this week we jumped right in with painting, sculptural and drawing projects across the grade levels.  The students gave me such a warm welcome back and we have been busy creating, creating, creating!  Coming soon at The Academy is our own student gallery housed in a room just off of the gymnasium.  This gallery will consistently rotate its exhibit to display the talents of our students.  Look for future posts, pictures of current work and other updates.  It's good to be back!

Welcome!

Welcome to the FACA art room blog!  FACA stands for The Falcon Academy of Creative Arts.  We are a brand new school opening for students in third through sixth grade who have a passion for all things creative!  At our school, our students will receive integration of visual art, music, movement and drama into their core subject areas like math, reading, science and social studies.

The purpose of this blog will be to showcase the art work that the students of FACA have created in my art room!  It is going to be an amazing school year with many exciting adventures along the way.  Now let's sit back and enjoy the ride...
